Surprise joined the family unexpectedly in 2004. We were heading to the South Bay to visit a friend on a weekend and I had just noticed that there was a boat show in the area. I have been thinking about getting a new portaboat, the folding dingy we had used with our last boat. It would be fun for running around when camping. It was the last day of the boat show and we had two hours to spare before it closed. Really and truly, that is all I was interested in looking for. While searching for the portaboat booth, we passed by the sailboats. I was surprised to see full sized boats right on the show floor. I had seen a few Hunters around and just did a quick comparison with some of the other main brands. I really liked the value of the Hunter. We looked at the sizes and thought that the 33 also was just an ideal boat. Large enough to live on, but small enough to be quite affordable.
One thing let to another and I just happened to get in a discussion with the sales manager. It seems that Pacific Yacht, a charter outfit in Santa Cruz wanted a Hunter 33 in their program, and whoever bought this boat would instantly get a slip in the Santa Cruz harbor, bypassing the 50 plus year waiting list, and your boat would be in a charter program, bringing in enough income to cover the expenses, and as it was the last hour of the show, and they had not sold one yet and most likely would not, they would give me a super deal, so I bought it on the spot. What a surprise!
So the boat lived in Santa Cruz form 2004 to 2007. We made many one to three day trips to Monterey, Stillwater Cove and Carmel, Moss Landing and around the bay, but they were always cold and bumpy so the plan to sail south was born.
